Tim Bergling, the popular Swedish DJ known as Avicii, reportedly died by suicide.
Citing "multiple sources familiar with the circumstances surrounding the famous DJ's death," a graphic TMZ report indicates that Bergling had self-inflicted injuries caused by glass.
Bergling was found dead in Muscat, Oman, on April 20th. He was 28 years old. Authorities ruled out foul play in his death, according to an earlier TMZ report, and a statement released by his family seemed to suggest the DJ had died by suicide.
"He really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness," it said in part. "He could not go on any longer. He wanted to find peace."
Here is the statement in full:
"Our beloved Tim was a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions.
An over-achieving perfectionist who travelled and worked hard at a pace that led to extreme stress.
When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most – music.
He really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness.
He could not go on any longer.
He wanted to find peace.
Tim was not made for the business machine he found himself in; he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but shunned the spotlight.
Tim, you will forever be loved and sadly missed.
The person you were and your music will keep your memory alive."
As MensHealth.com previously reported, Bergling retired from live performances in 2016, citing health reasons. He had his gallbladder and appendix taken out in 2014, and he experienced acute pancreatitis — an inflammation of the pancreas that can be caused by heavy alcohol consumption.
