Comparing the IPL and the PSL would be like comparing India and Germany in football. There’s a massive difference not just in the popularity of the leagues, but also in the level of cricket played in them. Here are a few points of comparison between the two leagues.
- The number of franchises and their popularity- While the PSL has six franchises which are hardly known outside the UAE and Pakistan, the IPL has eight franchises which even a guy sitting in the Carribean knows about.
- Brand of Cricket- By brand of cricket I mean the competitiveness and the intensity of cricket played between any two teams in the league. For a matter of fact, the highest score in the PSL this season is somewhere just over 200, the highest score in IPL is 263 with teams crossing the 200 run barrier at least over 15 times every season. While every team wraps up the game by the 15th over in the PSL, you are sure to expect a last-ball finish in almost every match of the IPL.
- Players- This is where the IPL beats the PSL. The PSL allows 5 foreign players in the playing 11 of its franchises to increase its entertainment quotient, the IPL permits 4 foreigners thereby promoting a balance between the Indian and International players. Moreover, while the IPL has unearthed talents like Bumrah and Pandya, the PSL hasn’t produced any great and well-known player in its 3 years of functioning. As for the foreign players, it’s simple. IPL outcasts or unsold players in the IPL play in the PSL for experience. ( NO OFFENSE INTENDED)
- Crowd- I’m sure you’ve heard every cricketer say that it is the fans that make the game more fun to watch. Yes, this is the truth. They play for us and we enjoy the game by watching them play. Almost every game in the IPL has packed stadiums while the PSL doesn’t even fill even half its stadiums.
The level of technology used in the two leagues remains the same, hence you cannot compare the leagues in this case. So, to sum this up, one can thank Australia for being the inventors of the shortest format of the game, but it is the IPL which has given every single cricketing nation the idea to start its own league to promote the development of young talent for the game.
Cheers!
